North Star Event at Gulliver’s Valley.

10 November 2023

On the 8th November 10 of our year 8 students visited Gulliver’s Valley to take part in the North Star science event.

During the day there were many different workshops that out students took part in, one of the workshops was run by the Army where students had to build their own robot and program it to move!

Our students had lots of fun carrying out this task.

As well as building robots they also had the opportunity to make a sand mould and pouring metal to creating their own cast! As well as also being able to use the ultra sonic equipment to detect defaults on some of the cast iron bar samples.

Here is one of our students pouring the metal into their mould, and the finished results of what they created!

They also participated in a workshop with Ibstock to learn the art and science behind brickmaking! They also got their hands stuck in making their own bricks from clay and sand and built a wall.

Barratt Developments Plc also gave our students the opportunity to create their own little village, they had to use many different styles of houses and roads to create their own village all while following the rules that were set before the task! This focused very much on their problem-solving skills and all the challenges that come with designing a real-life layout.

As well as the workshops there were also talks from Lord Andrew Mawson OBE who spoke about STEM roles on cruise ships as well as interviews, he had done with the people who work in those roles to give students an insight as to what working in a STEM role on a cruise ship involves.

Professor Brian Cox CBE also spoke about his work in physics and black holes!

The last speaker was Simon Goodwin who is a professor in theoretical astrophysics at the University of Sheffield who spoke all about planets and life beyond our own!

It was a fun packed day with lots of insight into science and STEM related roles, also with a bit of time for some rides!
